Comparing Elliptic Curve Cryptography and RSA on 8-bit CPUs

چکیده
Strong public-key cryptography is often considered to be too computationally expensive for small devices if not accelerated by cryptographic hardware. We revisited this statement and implemented elliptic curve point multiplication for 160-bit, 192-bit, and 224-bit NIST/SECG curves over GF(p) and RSA-1024 and RSA-2048 on two 8-bit microcontrollers. To accelerate multiple-precision multiplication, we propose a new algorithm to reduce the number of memory accesses. Implementation and analysis led to three observations: 1. Public-key cryptography is viable on small devices without hardware acceleration. On an Atmel ATmega128 at 8 MHz we measured 0.81s for 160-bit ECC point multiplication and 0.43s for a RSA-1024 operation with exponent e = 2 + 1. 2. The relative performance advantage of ECC point multiplication over RSA modular exponentiation increases with the decrease in processor word size and the increase in key size. 3. Elliptic curves over fields using pseudo-Mersenne primes as standardized by NIST and SECG allow for high performance implementations and show no performance disadvantage over optimal extension fields or prime fields selected specifically for a particular processor architecture.

A Discussion on Elliptic Curve Cryptography and Its Applications
Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is a kind of public key cryptosystem like RSA. But it differs from RSA in its quicker evolving capacity and by providing attractive and alternative way to researchers of cryptographic algorithm. The security level which is given by RSA can be provided even by smaller keys of ECC (for example, a 160 bit ECC has roughly the same security strength as 1024 bit RSA)...
متن کاملEfficient elliptic curve cryptosystems
Elliptic curve cryptosystems (ECC) are new generations of public key cryptosystems that have a smaller key size for the same level of security. The exponentiation on elliptic curve is the most important operation in ECC, so when the ECC is put into practice, the major problem is how to enhance the speed of the exponentiation. It is thus of great interest to develop algorithms for exponentiation...
متن کاملOn the Security of 1024-bit RSA and 160-bit Elliptic Curve Cryptography
Meeting the requirements of NIST’s new cryptographic standards means phasing out usage of 1024-bit RSA and 160-bit elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) by the end of the year 2010. This write-up comments on the vulnerability of these systems to an open community attack effort and aims to assess the risk of their unavoidable continued usage beyond 2010 until the migration to the new standards has b...
متن کاملA Fast Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem LSI Embedding Word-Based Montgomery Multiplier
Elliptic curve cryptosystems are expected to be a next standard of public-key cryptosystems. A security level of elliptic curve cryptosystems depends on a difficulty of a discrete logarithm problem on elliptic curves. The security level of a elliptic curve cryptosystem which has a public-key of 160-bit is equivalent to that of a RSA system which has a public-key of 1024-bit. We propose an ellip...
متن کاملFast Multi-precision Multiplication for Public-Key Cryptography on Embedded Microprocessors
Multi-precision multiplication is one of the most fundamental operations on microprocessors to allow public-key cryptography such as RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). In this paper, we present a novel multiplication technique that increases the performance of multiplication by sophisticated caching of operands. Our method significantly reduces the number of needed load instructions whi...
